Pan 86259 was composed on a train between London and Sheffield (the train was called ‘Peter Pan’ and its number 86259 – no I am not a spotter!). It is clearly influenced by minimal composers and processes, in particular Steve Reich (the obvious link is with Vermont Counterpoint though Desert Music is probably a closer sound world) and John Adams (I was, and still am, a huge fan of Grand Pianola Music). The extract is taken from the third section which has the performers hocketing melodic lines which are treated in canon.
